Afforestation campaign

International youth afforestation campaign was implemented within project “For everyone saved a tree (FOREST)”. The activity took place from 8th to 10th of November in the vicinity of Sokobanja, Serbia. During the campaign a mixed group of Bulgarian and Serbian youngsters, assisted by professional foresters from both countries, planted tree saplings on forest and urban areas.

The campaign brought together 25 Bulgarian youngsters (from Botevgrad municipality) and 25 youngsters (from Nis municipality). They were supported by 6 professional foresters from both countries. The foresters familiarized the participants with the nature, objectives and methods of afforestation and how to select appropriate tree species and schemes for afforestation. During the afforestation work they showed the way these activities to be carried on, provided technical guidance and methodological support to the youngsters.

The participants planted 1000 saplings in total. During the selection of terrains for afforestation priority was given to areas of importance to the local community. Through this activity, the youngsters acquired knowledge, skills and motivation to preserve biodiversity and reasonable use of forest resources. The campaign enhanced the exchange of knowledge between the youngsters and professional foresters from both countries.

Apart from the afforestation itself, an important part of the campaign was the intercultural exchange between the Bulgarian and Serbian youngsters. They lived together for 3 days sharing information about their homeplaces, countries and culture and, of course, having fun together.

The project is co-funded by EU through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria–Serbia Programme.
