FOREST youth training course

YMDRAB hosted an International youth training course on nature protection and sustainable use of forest resources. The event took place in Etropole from 6th to 8th of December 2019 bringing together 50 young people from Bulgaria and Serbia (25 youngsters from each country). They were trained by 6 forest scientists (3 Bulgarians and 3 Serbs).

The course included training sessions on the following topics:

  • Most widespread and valuable forest species and habitats in the cross-border area;
  • Negative human impact on forests;
  • The impact of climate change on forest ecosystems;
  • Forest resources and their sustainable use;
  • Ecosystem services provided by the forests;
  • NATURA 2000 protected areas.

The training sessions were based on methods for non-formal youth education, including interactive presentations, mixed working groups, role-plays, simulations, workshops, etc.

Outdoor activities also took place. The participants visited the beautiful Etropole Monastery and explored the nice beech forest around. Demonstrations and a lot of interesting discussions between youngsters and scientists took place in the forest.

The whole training program was based on the working method „To See – To Judge – To Act”. This implies that when a problem has been identified, than an assessment of the problem is conducted and only than actions are taken. By this method the youngsters were motivated to take follow-up actions for forest protection.

In the end of the training the youngsters checked what they had learned by a special test. Finally, of course everyone received certificate for participation in the training.

Apart from the training itself, an important part of the event was the intercultural exchange between the Bulgarian and Serbian youngsters. For 3 days they lived together, sharing information about their hometowns, countries and culture, and of course, having fun together.

The training course was implemented under project “For everyone saved a tree (FOREST)” No.CB. The project is co-funded by EU through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria–Serbia Programme.
