Herbarium of tree and shrub species

We continue to work on creating a joint Bulgarian-Serbian forest herbarium. 50 young people from Botevgrad and Nis, with support of forest scientists, made 150 herbariums of tree and shrub species in both countries. The activity took place in the period 02-04.10.2020 in Etropole and Niska Banja. Both the national groups worked simultaneously and on the same agenda in both countries.

In addition to the practical work of collecting materials for herbariums and processing them, joint online sessions were held every day between the two national groups to share what they had done during the day, as well as for theoretical and cultural exchange.

A week earlier, another 50 youngsters made another 150 herbariums, but from forest herbs, ferns and mosses. Thus, we have already created 300 herbariums of forest plants from the cross-border region.

The next step is to bring together the Bulgarian and Serbian herbariums and make exhibitions with them in both countries. Through these youth initiatives, we aim to draw the attention of young people and society as a whole to the importance of protecting forests and natural resources.

This activity is implemented under project “For everyone saved a tree (FOREST)”. The project is co-funded by EU through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria–Serbia Programme.
