Detecting and control of forest pests and diseases

 

 

 

 

YMDRAB implemented an activity for acquainting young people with health problems of forests. The event took place from 16th to 18th November in Etropole bringing together 25 youngsters and 6 forest scientists.

On the first day the experts did presentations about the most common forest pests and diseases (insects and fungal pathogens) and sylvicultural activities for improving health status of forests. Introduction to the objectives and activities of project “For everyone saved a tree (FOREST)” was made and the project Database was presented.

On the second day the participants visited coniferous plantation in bad health condition where the youngsters were directly involved in research process on field. The experts demonstrated use of a drone to remotely assess the health status of the forest stand, damages by pests and diseases and mapping of affected areas. They found together the main fungal pathogen in this stand (Dothistroma septosporum) and insect pests Ips sexdentatus and Pissodes spp., and explored damages they cause on trees. After that, the participants visited and investigated a beech forest near to Etropole monastery. They found out the main insect pest there Orchestes fagi and wood destroying fungal pathogens Pholiota aurivella and Fomes fomentarius on beech stems and Pholiota adiposa on common hornbeam stems. The experts presented methods of control and silvicultural systems for improving the health status of the area. In the evening the participants uploaded information and pictures on the project Joint Database.

On the third day, the experts demonstrated applying of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and MAES (Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystem Services) process and organized educational games on the topics. After that, a questionnaire about the new things learnt took place. Also, a spiritual impulse on preserving forests and natural heritage and group discussion about the role of young people in this process took place. In the end, each youngster received Certificate for participation in the activity.
